Marrakech airport to the Medina

Six kilometres and fifteen to twenty-five minutes, and the last two hundred metres are the part nobody warns you about. Here is what the transfer costs, where the car can actually reach, and how you get to a riad a car cannot.

The distance is not the problem

Menara airport sits about 6 km from the Medina walls — closer than most capital-city airports are to their centres, and 15 to 25 minutes by road outside the morning and evening peaks. What makes this transfer different from any other is the last stretch. The Medina is a walled medieval city of roughly 18 km of lanes, most of them too narrow for a car and many closed to vehicles entirely. Your riad almost certainly has no road to its door. It has a gate, a few minutes' walk away, and knowing which one is the whole job.

What actually goes wrong here

  • Being dropped at the wrong gate. The Medina has more than a dozen, and the walk between two of them can be twenty minutes with luggage on uneven ground. A driver who does not know your riad will pick the gate he knows.
  • Mapping apps stop being useful inside the walls. The lanes are covered, most are unnamed, and GPS drifts between them. A pin on a phone is not an address here.
  • Fares are negotiated at the rank, not metered. Petit taxis are not licensed to pick up at the airport at all, so the meter you would use in town is not an option on arrival.
  • Late arrivals make all of it harder. Most flights into Marrakech land in the evening, the souks are shut, the lanes are dark and there is nobody to ask.

Your three options

Grand taxi at the rank

The official rate to the Medina is 50–80 MAD by day and 75–120 MAD at night, but there is no meter — you agree a price before getting in. Cheapest of the three, and the one that most often ends at a gate that is not yours.

Bus 19

Runs airport to Gueliz to the Medina every 30–40 minutes for about 20 MAD, taking 30 to 50 minutes. Genuinely good value travelling light and alone. It stops at the square, not at your riad, so the walk at the end is yours.

Private transfer, booked ahead

15 € fixed for up to four, agreed before you fly. Tell us the riad name when you book and the driver goes to the right gate — and if the lane is walkable he carries the bags to the door. That last part is the difference on this route, not the price.

Questions people ask

How far is the Medina from Marrakech airport?

About 6 km by road, which takes 15 to 25 minutes depending on traffic. Allow longer between 8 and 10 in the morning and around sunset, when the roads by the walls are busiest.

How much is a taxi from Marrakech airport to the Medina?

The official grand taxi rate is 50–80 MAD by day and 75–120 MAD at night, negotiated at the rank rather than metered. A fixed-price private transfer is 15 € for up to four passengers, or 25 € for a van carrying up to seven, agreed before you land.

Can a car reach my riad inside the Medina?

Usually not to the door, and no operator can change that — the lanes are too narrow and many are closed to vehicles. We drive to the closest gate your riad sits behind, which is normally a few minutes' walk. Give us the riad name when you book and the driver will know which gate that is.

Is there a bus from Marrakech airport to the Medina?

Yes. Bus 19 runs between the airport, Gueliz and the Medina every 30 to 40 minutes for around 20 MAD, taking 30 to 50 minutes. It is a good option with light luggage in daylight, and a poor one with cases, children or a late arrival.

Book the Medina transfer

15 € fixed, agreed before you fly. Send us your flight number and the name of your riad — we track the flight, the driver waits at arrivals holding your name, and he already knows which gate to drive to.
