The Sahara is further from Marrakech than almost anyone expects. The tall dunes at Merzouga are about 560 km away — eight to ten hours of driving, each way, over a mountain pass. Every decision about a desert trip follows from that one number.
So the real question is not "how many days should I spend in the desert?" It is "how many days am I willing to spend getting there and back?"
Two days: Zagora only
Roughly 12 hours in a vehicle. One night. Small dunes.
A two-day trip cannot reach Merzouga. It reaches Zagora, about 360 km away, where the dunes near Tinfou are low, thin and a short walk from the road.
The drive is good — over the Tizi n'Tichka pass, through Agdz, then down the Draa Valley past a palm grove that runs for kilometres. And a night in a camp under a desert sky is a night in a camp under a desert sky.
But be clear about what you are buying. You will spend most of both days in a seat, and the sand at the end is not the sand in the brochure. Book it because two days is genuinely all you have, not because you think it is a shorter route to the same place.
Three days: the trip worth taking
Merzouga and Erg Chebbi. Two nights, one of them in the dunes.
Three days is the minimum that reaches the desert most people are picturing, and it is the length we recommend to almost everyone.
- Day 1 — Marrakech over the Tizi n'Tichka, stopping at Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, overnight in the Dades valley.
- Day 2 — Through the Dades or Todra gorge, reaching the dunes in the late afternoon. Camel out to camp, dinner, and the sky.
- Day 3 — Sunrise from a dune, then the drive back to Marrakech.
Day three is a long one, and there is no way around it. What makes the trip work is that day one and day two are not transit — Aït Ben Haddou and the gorges are among the best things you will see in Morocco. You are not enduring the drive to get to the reward; the drive is a good part of the reward.
Four days: the same route, unhurried
One extra night changes the rhythm completely.
The fourth day removes the pressure from every other one. You stop where you want, you spend an hour at Aït Ben Haddou instead of twenty minutes, and you reach the dunes with time to walk into them before dinner rather than arriving as the light goes.
It also opens a better return. Instead of driving back the way you came, you can carry on north to Fes, which turns the last leg into a second journey rather than a repeat of the first. Most people who have the days available say this is the version they would book again.
Five days or more
With five days you can reach Erg Chigaga beyond M'Hamid, where the last 60 km is off-road and the reward is emptiness — you can stand on a dune there and see nobody. Or you can combine the Sahara with the coast, or with the Atlas valleys, and stop treating the desert as a single item to be ticked off.

What about a one-day desert trip?
There is no one-day trip to the Sahara from Marrakech. Anything sold as a "one-day desert experience" is the Agafay stone desert, about an hour from the city.
That is not a criticism. Agafay is genuinely beautiful — a rolling, rocky moonscape with camps, camel rides and the Atlas on the horizon — and it gives you a fire and a sky full of stars without twelve hours in a car. It is simply not sand, and not the Sahara. If your dates are tight, it is a far better use of an evening than a rushed dash to Zagora.
